Light & Dark Honey
The tradition of meliponiculture—beekeeping with stingless bees—has thrived in the Yucatán Peninsula for over 3,000 years, a practice deeply rooted in Mayan culture. The Melipona Beecheii, or Xunan-Kab, bees produce our Raw Mayan Light and Dark Honeys, each with a unique flavor profile reflecting the region’s biodiversity. Light Honey, with its delicate sweetness, comes from nectar of tropical flowers like dzidzilché, while Dark Honey, with its rich, acidic notes, is sourced from the t’zalam tree, a Mayan sacred plant. The Mayans used this honey not only as a sweetener but also as a medicine, applying it to wounds, treating respiratory ailments, and supporting digestion, a practice documented in ancient texts like the Madrid Codex.
Modern science validates these traditional uses. Raw Melipona honey is rich in phenolic compounds and flavonoids, giving it potent antioxidant properties. A 2019 study in Food Chemistry found that stingless bee honey has higher antioxidant activity than Apis bee honey, helping to combat oxidative stress and support immune health. Its antimicrobial properties, driven by hydrogen peroxide and low water content, make it effective for soothing sore throats and promoting digestive health, as noted in a 2020 Journal of Ethnopharmacology study. Additionally, Melipona honey’s unique acidity (pH 3.2–3.6) enhances its preservation and therapeutic effects, supporting respiratory health by reducing inflammation in the airways. At Stem Cell Tulum, our unpasteurized Light and Dark Honeys preserve these natural benefits, offering a taste of Mayan tradition and the healing power of the Yucatán’s flora in every jar.
